Q: What are the requirements to become a foster parent?
A: Whether single or married, owning or renting, here’s what you need to become a foster parent:

  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Pass a background check through DFPS.
  • Have sufficient income to sustain your household.
  • Be committed to supporting, caring for, and providing for children.
  • Embrace a child-centered approach to care.
  • Have your home inspected by the agency and, if necessary, appropriate city departments.
  • Complete and submit required paperwork regarding the child’s progress on a weekly basis.

Q: How long does it take to become a foster parent?
A: The process typically takes 1-2 months, depending on how quickly you complete required training, submit documents, and allow for home inspections.

Q: Can I adopt my foster child?
A: Yes, if the child in your care is eligible for adoption. Our agency provides adoption services, including access to an in-house adoption lawyer at no additional cost.

Q: Can I foster a child who is a relative or family friend?
A: Yes, kinship foster homes are for children placed with relatives, grandparents, extended family, or close family friends through CPS.

Q: Can a single parent become a foster parent?
A: Yes! Single parents can absolutely become foster parents. We have many single-parent homes that provide loving and nurturing environments for foster children.

Q: Do I need to own a home to foster a child?
A: No, you can either own a home or rent an apartment. The key requirement is that your space is clean, tidy, and provides at least 40 square feet of bedroom space per child.

Q: What is the minimum age to become a foster parent?
A: You must be at least 21 years old.

Q: Do I need to be employed to become a foster parent?
A: Yes, you must have a stable income to cover your basic living expenses.

Q: Will I be reimbursed for providing foster care?
A: Yes, foster care services are reimbursed according to state requirements.

Q: Do I need to complete training to become a foster parent?
A: Yes, you’ll need to complete both online self-instructed training and trainer-led sessions provided by the agency.
